The male's advertisement call is a low-pitched, guttural, pig-like grunt, often given in a series: "grunt, grunt, grunt." The number of grunts in a series is related to temperature: a rapid series of up to eight or ten grunts may be given during warm and humid period. Large choruses produce a steady roar. Common in southern swamps and marshes where it may be heard calling from April to August.
